Product Description
Musical celebration of the founding of the United States based on the Broadway play of the same title.

Amazon.com
The hit Broadway musical by Peter Stone and Sherman Edwards became the basis for this 1972 film about America's first congress and the nation's declaration of independence from Britain. Most of the original cast members are aboard, including William Daniels as John Adams. The film is a little stodgy and moves stiffly from scene to scene--the adaptation to the screen is not a smooth success. But it is nonetheless captivating, considering that so few films have dealt directly with America's birth. Directed by Peter H. Hunt. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Historical fun and music   August 23, 2010
P. Whealon (Waterbury, CT United States)
1776 is a tremendous stage-to-film version of the classic American musical. To view the musical on-stage is one thing, but to see it in a real-life setting makes it come to life. No, the characters aren't what these men were really like, but they certainly provide the proper flavor of them. Ben Franklin and Richard Henry Lee are two creations that show the best of these two men. And the poignant minor characters {the messenger and the Congressional clerk}, add a depth and vitality to the entire proceedings.

As a history teacher, I know that the movie is inaccurate - there were more delegates to the Congress, not everyone signed the Declaration at the same time, the debates weren't the same things that we see in the movie. And yet, this will give you general sense of the Congress - of the compromises that drove the Founding Fathers to this great moment in our American History.

It is enjoyable for any audience. And, if you view it early in July, you may find a little tear coming to your eyes and a catch in your throat as the final moments of the movie play themselves out. It is fun, it is musical and it's history.

1 out of 5 stars Part of a movie   August 18, 2010

I bought this because I'd seen the stage version on its original tour and also the movie on its original release.

If I had realized John Cullum's rendition of "Molasses to Rum to Slaves" was missing, I would not have paid a penny for this DVD. I don't know how you can call a movie restored when one of the most striking scenes is missing. I call it theft.

4 out of 5 stars I love this movie   August 11, 2010

This is a drama about the writing of the Declaration of Independence. It is also a musical! There are charming and funny moments but the truth is it is a drama about some of the hardest decisions ever made. I am so proud of our forefathers!

5 out of 5 stars One of the most underrated musicals   August 8, 2010

Great music and very well done movie. Also, educational. I don't know why this musical isn't more popular.

5 out of 5 stars Great history lesson, but more than that--fun!   August 6, 2010

This is one of the best musicals ever! Many of the original cast members are in the movie, making it very special indeed.
